A friend teaching English abroad in Japan for the year alerted us to the luxury fruits sold in upscale market places. Most fascinating to us are the square watermelons that sell for upwards of 10,000 yen, which is nearly $98 USD. At one exclusive fruit parlor (yes, fruit parlor) there are certain square watermelon specimens that sell for over $200 USD, for just one watermelon. Can’t say we’ve seen anything that fancy in the produce sections of our local grocery stores.
